Pam Lashley is the Dance Director at KidsAmerica and a teacher and coach in the Houston County School System. Pam is not only a dance expert – she is a pageant queen with approximately 15 pageant titles. Pam likes pageants because they “build confidence, make girls feel better about themselves, and teach stage presence and how to present themselves in front of other people.”
She has been dancing since she was two years old and teaching dance since 1992. She has degrees in physical education, coaching and athletic administration. She likes teaching and coaching because she likes to see girls come out of their shell and develop into poised and confident young ladies. She said “ I love to see girls who start out shy and unsure of themselves, blossom and become very proud of themselves.”

Pam believes that dance lessons teach coordination, grace, beauty of movement, posture, presentation and self-confidence. There is no other area where you can learn the types of skills that you will learn in dance lessons. She feels that the talent portion of a pageant is important because it shows that the contestant is well rounded. It demonstrates an intense level of training in a contestant that you would not see in just a regular pageant without talent.

She decides what type of music and choreography to use in a pageant dance routine by selecting something that fits the person who is performing and also has a lot of crowd involvement that the audience will really get into. According to Pam, the hardest part of coaching a girl for a dance performance is selecting the right music. The choreography, teaching and coaching come easy but picking out that music can be difficult sometimes.

Pam loves what she does and says “the best advice that I can give is for you to be the best you that you can be. This means to always strive to be yourself and not to try to be somebody that you are not. Be the best you that you can be.”
